About Our Principal

Dear Parents and Scholars of South Whidbey Middle School,

Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year!  I look forward to another amazing year with the South Whidbey community.  It is an honor to work with such dedicated staff, parents, and students. A new year offers a new set of opportunities and positive growth.  It is up to us as a collective group to embrace these opportunities to continue creating the best learning environment possible.

We are all stakeholders in educating students at South Whidbey and communication is paramount.  We are open to address questions and concerns you may have over the year as well as pass along any positives you may have to staff and students.  Educating our students is a collective effort and South Whidbey is known for the shared commitment between school, parents, and community to provide the best educational possibilities for our youth.

Parents, middle school is a perfect time for your student to practice articulating some of the thoughts rolling around his or mind. I encourage you to talk to your students about what they are learning in the classroom. Practicing communication will help students develop a deeper understanding of the material as well as help identify where misconceptions might lie.  This is just one small way of building a bridge between school and home.

Students, I am excited to work with you and watch the amazing growth you will make over this next year.  These years hold some of the most exciting and challenging opportunities for you to grow from as a student and individual.  We want to see you here everyday and want to celebrate your successes over the year. We are also here to help you navigate through your days in the most positive manner possible.  What can you do to help this year be the most enjoyable for you and the community around you?

  • Come to school with a positive/growth mindset and be open to learning

  • Be intellectually curious and willing to give your best effort in classes

  • Be mindful of how to communicate with your teachers and classmates in the most positive and productive way

  • Take ownership of your learning and challenge yourself to grow academically and socially

  • Contribute to our school community and help make it a comfortable and exciting place to be

If there is any way I can help support you or offer assistance, please do not hesitate to ask.  We are set up for a great year. Go Cougars!

Respectfully,

James Swanson

Principal
