Greetings Cougars!
I am excited, eager and a little nervous to begin the school year with all of our SWMS Cougars. I bet that I
am in good company with the jumble of emotions and I will not try to hide mine! It is a pleasure to be a
part of your middle school experience! I am Kayla Phillips, Middle School Principal. We have a wonderful,
welcoming and excited staff here to help your middle school experience be a positive and memorable one!
Below is plenty of information and anything in blue is a link to even more information for you.

NEW STAFF
Lindsey Richards, part-time Social Studies. Please welcome Ms. Richards to South Whidbey Middle!
She comes to us as a National Board Certified Teacher with years of experience in the Northshore School
District. She is a South Whidbey graduate that is welcomed back with open arms!
Lindsey Grimm, Counselor intern. Please welcome Ms. Grimm as she completes her counseling
internship here at SWMS. She is deeply committed to our community, supporting students and working with
staff to grow her skills while helping students.
Erin Brewer, student teacher. Ms. Brewer will work with Ms. Milan in 7th grade science to complete
her student teaching experience.
HANDBOOK Our 7-12 Handbook answers a lot of questions for both students and families. A few things will
be developed through our restorative practices process- cell phones, lunchroom expectations and updated
later. Please click here for your reference. Student handbooks will be reviewed the first weeks of school in
class.

SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING: Mental wellness is a huge priority and focus of our SWMS staff. We are using
the Caring School Community Social-Emotional Learning curriculum, along with all staff being trained in
Restorative Justice practices, in advisory for explicit lessons and will embed the common language,
expectations and strategies across the board at SWMS. Here is their site for you to review the curriculum.
TRANSPORTATION:
● If your student is taking the bus, please check out Bus Routes on the district page, or communicate
with Transportation.
● Drop off and pick up- Please enter through the South entrance on Maxwelton and drop your student off
at the New Commons doors. We want SWMS students to enter here and access the stairwell to MS
classes from the New Commons. Circle through and exit the same way you entered. Caution: HS drivers

use this lot, so use caution and good judgment. 5 MPH is the speed limit. DO NOT enter through the
bus lane or the North entrance.
FAQ:
● Supply List Found here
● SWMS Sports Information found here (Contacts: Paul Lagerstedt, Athletic Director or Elyeen
Uculmana, Athletic Secretary)
● Fees - fees will be distributed the first week of school depending on the student's class(es). If you
have financial hardships regarding fees, please contact Eyleen Uculmana or Readiness to Learn here
● CHROMEBOOKS: each student has a chromebook assigned to them. Please bring them fully charged
everyday. For students who don’t have a Chromebook yet, please go to the library to check one out.
COMMUNICATIONS:
● Teacher communication: all staff manage and maintain an active Google Classroom. This has been
proven to be an excellent communication tool for guardians and students. Additionally, utilize your
student to gain and grow in advocacy and communication skills first and secondly, direct email
connection to the teacher.
● Skyward: please work alongside your student to regularly review skyward to stay in the loop on their
academic progress. They will do this weekly in advisory and should be skilled in accessing it.
● Parent Square is another new tool the district has adopted and a great way to communicate and
keep up to date with classroom and school wide updates. See district website for login information.
SCHEDULES: Student schedules can be accessed on Wednesday, August 24th via Skyward. Once schedules
are given to students for the year, schedule changes will be considered ONLY for the following reasons:
incomplete schedule given to student, courses are out of sequence (e.g., Advanced Math before grade level
math), Band for a non-band student. Schedule changes can be made for the above reasons only. Students
have up until the second Friday of the new semester to request a change via this form. We do our best to
accommodate, but there are no guarantees.

ELECTIVES/SEMESTER COURSES:The elective rotation will take place quarterly with a lot of variety and fun
for student interest and exploration. Health is one of the four electives taken by all 7th graders. When your
student cycles into Health, additional information about the course curriculum will be available to you. Most
students will take one semester of P.E. and one semester of either Washington State or US History.
